Adaptive EEG-Based Alertness Estimation System by Using ICA-Based Fuzzy Neural Networks

Abstract: Drivers' fatigue has been implicated as a causal factor in many accidents. The development of human cognitive state monitoring system for the drivers to prevent accidents behind the steering wheel has become a major focus in the field of safety driving. It requires a technique that can continuously monitor and estimate the alertness level of drivers. The difficulties in developing such a system are lack of significant index for detecting drowsiness and the interference of the complicated noise in a realistic a… Show more

“…3) include a wireless transmission module and a chargeable battery, which allow recordings to be made without being tethered to a computer; thus, subjects are able to move freely around the room/office. For instance, we can use these wireless and wearable EEG devices to conduct complex experiments, such as drowsy driving [33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40], distracted driving [41], [42], motion sickness [43], [44], or navigation [45] in a motion simulator (Fig. 4(a-b)) or real-world driving environment (Fig.…”

“…The presence of glasses may affect the core components of the system algorithm [8] including face detection, eye detection. Illumination based approaches [9] Although IR based approaches perform reasonably at night time it requires the necessity of installing an IR LEDs setup and maintenance.…”

“…Certainly, due to the lack of precise definition of fatigue, there is not any measurable criterion to measure it [9]. Although a precise definition for fatigue is not defined yet, but there is a relation between fatigue and body temperature, electrical resistance of skin, eye movement, breathing rate, heart rate and brain activity [3,9,12,13]. One of the first and most important signs of fatigue appears in eyes.…”

“…In the early afternoon hours, after eating lunch and at midnight, driver drowsiness is much more than other times. In addition, drinking alcohol, drug addiction and using hypnotic medicines can lead to loss of consciousness [1,2,3].…”
