To help clinicians better understand case study research and encourage clinicians to share valuable experiences with others in the field, this article will define case study, identify the components of case studies, review critical considerations in case studies, and provide a recommended template for qualitative case studies. Fifteen case studies published in the International Journal of Play Therapy will be examined to review the process of these case studies, and the potential contribution of the study to illustrate the use of play therapy. Suggestions for further directions in the area of case study methodology in play therapy will be made.Empirical evidence of the effectiveness of play therapy as a method for counseling children continues to be of interest to practitioners, consumers, and managed care providers. Over the past 10 years, several meta-analytic studies (Bratton, Ray, Rhine, & Jones, 2005;LeBlanc & Ritchie, 2001) of quantitative research indicated that play therapy is an effective treatment for a myriad of problems experienced by children. To establish the effectiveness of treatment over an extended period of time, quantitative research requires large populations of children to ensure validity and reliability. In what has become a globally transient society, reliable quantitative methods are becoming more problematic. As quantitative research is challenged by the changing structures of society, qualitative research provides methods that examine in depth a smaller population including the complexities of an individual. Although quantitative research is identified as the primary source for establishing evidence-based treatment, qualitative research can illustrate and reveal much needed information on treatment and the results of treatment approaches. Qualitative research "begins with assumptions, a worldview, the possible use of a theoretical lens, and the study of research problems inquiring into the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem" (Creswell, 2007, p. 37). Among qualitative research methods, the case study provides an opportunity for a researcher or practitioner to examine a specific problem or issue within a particular setting or context to illustrate or reveal principles, effectiveness, and results in an individual case.
