With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), assistive applications and smart environments can tap into a growing amount of context information to learn about their users, their surroundings and typical behavior. This information is useful to adapt intelligently, autonomously and non-intrusively to a myriad of circumstances. However, trustworthiness and reliable adaptation to changes in line with user expectationsespecially to situations that the developers did not anticipate-remain key concerns. Understanding the impact of changes from a developer (design time) and system (runtime) perspective, and ensuring that no undesired side effects take place are two non-trivial research challenges to increase the adoption of such applications. Given the limited tool support for anticipating change at design time and runtime, we present our change impact analysis (CIA) methodologyfound in the formal semantic modeling of intelligent environments and rule-based application behavior-to contribute to the development and deployment of reliable context-aware adaptive applications. We validate our contributions on nontrivial smart home and office scenarios, and demonstrate how our framework helps increase trust in intelligent environment applications by anticipating change implications upfront at design time and by minimizing the occurrence of undesired side effects at runtime.

Abstract:Recently, multimedia computing turns into mobile, pervasive and context-aware. Adaptive multimedia computing is becoming the new paradigm for building complex information systems based on the use of different devices, web services and XML specifications. In dynamic environments, multimedia applications are potentially adaptive and are aware of their changing contexts. An intelligent context-aware infrastructure must be based on an appropriate context model such as to represent, manage and access context information. This paper proposes an ontology-based context model that supports context reasoning and context management for adaptive multimedia systems. The proposed model is flexible as it provides a general framework that can be applied to each multimedia application. Moreover, the model is extensible as it provides mechanisms to add new multimedia domain specifications.

Abstract. Ubiquitous computing environments are characterised by a high number of heterogeneous devices that generate a huge amount of context data. These data are used to adapt applications to changing execution contexts. However, legacy frameworks fail to process context information in a scalable and efficient manner. In this paper, we propose to organise the classical functionalities of a context manager to introduce a 3-steps cycle of data collection, interpretation, and situation identification. We propose the COSMOS framework, which is based on the concepts of context node and context management policies translated into software components in software architecture. This paper presents COSMOS and evaluates its efficiency throughout the example of the composition of context information to implement a caching/off-loading adaptation situation.
