Adaptive Behavior in Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified: Microanalysis of Scores on the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to provide a microanalysis of differences in adaptive functioning seen between well-matched groups of school-aged children with autism and those diagnosed as having Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, all of whom functioned in the mild to moderate range of intellectual impairment. Findings indicate that the major area of difference between children with autism and those with Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, was expressive communication… Show more

“…A large part of the researches involved on the description of the different clinical pictures that are part of the autistic spectrum emphasizes the need of multidisciplinary perspectives for diagnosis (9). The search for better diagnostic criteria has generated several studies (10)(11)(12)(13)(14).…”

“…Paul et al (2004) found that children with autism had lower Socialization and Communication skills than children with PDD-NOS. Gillham et al (2000) reported deficits in Daily Living Skills as well as Socialization and Communication (after controlling for differences in MA) suggesting that adaptive behaviour was generally lower in autism versus PDD-NOS.…”

“…Vineland adaptive behavior rating scale 2nd edition Parent-reported measurement of change in social and communication skill level was obtained through parent-completed Vineland Adaptive Behavior Rating Scale, 2nd Edition [21,22]. Furthermore, to better understand the change in adaptive skills in children with autism spectrum disorder, researchers [23,24] have suggested examining not only the total scores of the domains and subdomains but also examining the scores of item subsets that measure specific adaptive skills. These item subsets are provided directly on the Vineland-II protocol as well as in the User's Manual [22] and were used in this study to gain a specific insight into treatment impact on social and communication skills.…”
