Adaptive beacon broadcast in opportunistic routing for VANETs

Abstract: Broadcast of beacon messages including geographic coordinates, node speeds, and directions are among the most commonly used methods in routing protocols of VANETs to obtain neighboring positions. Broadcast of periodic beacon messages in fixed time intervals will reduce network performance due to increased channel load and contention. In this paper, an adaptive update strategy for sending beacon messages according to the VANETs' characteristics (position, speed, and direction) and the nature of broadcast wirele… Show more

“…The work in [15] proposes an Adaptive Beacon Broadcast Opportunistic Routing (ABOR) strategy that considers link life-time and predicts the link expiry time to route packets in an efficient way. The authors in [16][17][18][19] suggest the use of ant colony method for route discovery.…”

“…The works in [13,14] also use OR, and the routing criteria in them as well as in [12] consist of a combination of three parameters. However, none of them addresses the vehicle density changes of the road and does not discriminate dense from sparse conditions.…”

“…The approach performs well for both highway and urban scenarios. Adaptive beacon broadcast in opportunistic routing (ABOR) [82] is a beacon control strategy where periodic beaconing broadcast is carried keeping in consideration the position, speed and direction. Beaconing frequency is decided upon calculating the life time of the link between two nodes.…”
