Adaptive antenna arrays for mobile satellite communications

Abstract: The problem of increasing the number of users in FDMA mobile satellite communication systems is addressed. An antenna array is used to estimate the AOA of desired and cochannel mobile users then the same array is used to allocate the maximum of the pattern to desired users while cochannel interference is nulled. This paper describes the use of the MUSIC algorithm for the DOA estimation. Pattern nulls are obtained using the Wiener Solution for the optimum array weights. It is shown that this approach allows clo… Show more

“…As a consequence, the UL throughput can't be significantly increased, though some diversity gain can be achieved by the receive antennas of the base station (BS) using linear combiners [3]. Another option for increasing UL throughput is using spatial division multiple accesses (SDMA), where users are spatially identified based on their location [4]. In spite of the appreciable performance improvement by SDMA, it is always very sensitive to the location of the MSs and requires a high number of antennas to achieve the required performance.…”

“…Each of these applications is associated with its own unique set of challenges, such as the channel in which the system operates, the propagation environment, sources of interference, and noise or jamming. In addition, the end goal for which the adaptive antenna is used affects the selection of the type of array, size, adaptive algorithms, and integration with other system components [1,2].…”
