Adapting Case-Based Teaching to Large Class Settings: An Action Research Approach

Abstract: While literature points to significant benefits from using case-based teaching in accounting education, the extent to which these benefits can be obtained with large undergraduate classes is not evident. Using an action research approach, strategies for the use of case-based teaching in large classes at an Irish university were developed and evaluated. Insights into the nature of the challenges facing lecturers and students in the large class setting were obtained. The researchers found that, by using appropri… Show more

“…According to Baker & Logan (2006), the AR is the appropriate methodology to conduct the accounting education research (see, also, Abbott & Palatnik, 2018;Cohen et al, 2005;Doran et al, 2011;Hughes, 1997). “…AR has been defined in T&L environment as "an approach to improving education through change, by encouraging teachers to be aware of their own practice, to be critical of that practice and to be prepared to change it" (McNiff, 1988, 4;see, also, Baker & Logan, 2006;Carr & Kemmis, 1986;Doran et al, 2011;Torrance & Pryor, 2001). In the same vein, Paisey & Paisey (2003) state that AR method is suited to investigate T&L practices in classrooms as it can be conducted by people (e.g.…”

“…In particular, this can be one of the learning and assessment challenges facing tutors who teach large classes (Ashworth, Bannister and Thorne, 1997;Doran et al, 2011). One solution, suggested by Nnadi (2003), Blayney and Freeman (2008), and others, is to ensure that each student is set different questions.…”

“…The popularity of cases in academe also stems, in part, from the support of published teaching notes that provide case-specific implementation guidance (Howard and Stout, 2006). This guidance for instructors is additionally supported by empirical studies that offer advice on accounting case use (e.g., Stout, 1996;Boyce, Williams, Kelly, and Yee, 2001;Doran, Healy, McCutcheon, and O'Callaghan, 2011). By contrast, relatively little published research gives advice for students preparing analyses of accounting cases.…”
