Adapted-Consumer-Technology Approach to Making Near-Infrared-Reflectography Visualization of Paintings and Murals Accessible to a Wider Audience

Abstract: Smartphone technology has the potential to make heritage science accessible to museums, individual collectors, and educators. Infrared reflectography (IRR) is a nondestructive analysis method used by museums to gain information about the provenance, history, and aging of artworks. This paper introduces a highly accessible, inexpensive apparatus for near-infrared (NIR) imaging of paintings: a long-pass filter with a 750 nm cut-on wavelength mounted on a Samsung HTC smartphone back-facing camera. This method pro… Show more

“…As part of conservation science, EB luminescence imaging lies at a fascinating multidisciplinary intersection between humanities (namely art, history, and archaeology) and STEM (namely science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). There is a wide consensus about the fact that interdisciplinary courses that combine science and art can provide students with a more comprehensive understanding of complex concepts in chemistry and physics (Smith et al 2009;Torres and Floyd 2019). Thanks to their charm, their simplicity of use, and the possibility of being used directly by each individual, MNVGs can therefore help the students to approach and delve into disciplines outside their comfort zone, improving their attention and comprehension.…”

“…Torres, A. et al believed that infrared imaging is a nondestructive analysis of historical art as well as aging information, which has the effect of improving the picture visibility and extracting features of image elements. Applying the method of infrared imaging to teaching has a certain role in promoting teaching reform [13]. Guo L et al analyzed the characteristics of visualization technology combined with VRML technology, constructed a visual work information system based on VRML, realized the virtual art product visualization threedimensional modeling, and looked forward to the effect of the use of this technology in teaching [14].…”

“…The corresponding data information visualization decision mainly uses visualization technology to transform the important data, decisions, judgments, predictions and corresponding models in the design process so that they can be seen and understood by humans to provide clear, simple and scientific decision-making reference for decision-makers and designers [2], [3]. Conventional data information visualization technology imports the corresponding data into the preprocessing and processing data module [4], [5]. Then the data module analyzes and models it based on the corresponding data [6], carries out a large number of analogue-to-digital conversions, and carries out visual displays based on this digital information [7], [8] When this kind of software is actually running, it first carries out digital modelling processing for the corresponding processes that need modelling, which mainly includes digital conversion and mathematical statistics of the corresponding data, and then filters the corresponding data based on the statistical results, Through the corresponding query method, we can filter the data that need a visual operation, and finally create the corresponding visual interactive design chart.…”
