“…This will allow for actively shaping the periurban transformation and eventually steer it in a more sustainable direction. One way of doing so can be action oriented transformative research, aiming at involving local actors in the development of alternative transformative pathways towards a sustainable future [121][122][123]. Designing these pathways with local communities is the goal of the next phase in the authors' joint research project.…”

“…Based on our findings, we strongly recommend that 'PLAN' model is adopted in future drought studies while integrating a multi-criteria approach and flexibility based on study context. We also suggest that adaptive drought management is included in the disaster management plans: this is important as the climate is constantly changing and this would help to enable flexibility to capture future uncertainties in climate conditions (Werners et al 2021). A proactive early warning system should be enforced and encouraged.…”

“…To facilitate the development of regional adaptation pathways (e.g., Werners et al, 2021) for the Spanish Mediterranean coast, linking adaptation with risk levels, these vulnerability results have to be fitted to a probability distribution. Such distribution will enable the characterization of low, medium and high levels of risk (Figure 11) along this or any studied coast.…”
