Adaptation of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s ‘Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture’ to the Bosnia and Herzegovina context

Abstract: ObjectivesMeasuring staff perspectives on patient safety culture (PSC) can identify areas of concern that, if addressed, could lead to improvements in healthcare. To date, there is no validated measure to assess PSC that has been tested and adapted for use in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). This research addresses the gap in the evidence through the psychometric assessment of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s: ‘Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture’ (HSOPSC), to determine its suitability for t… Show more

“…Although HSOPSC 1.0 and 2.0 measure the same areas of patient safety culture, the 2.0 version resulted in substantial changes, including 21 items dropped, 25 items reworded or response options changed, and 10 items added. Early findings suggest that translated versions of the HSOPSC 2.0 will perform better in international hospital environments than original version translations [ 54 ]. The HSOPSC 1.0 and 2.0 are available at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality resource center for the HSOPSC [ 49 ].…”

“…Based on these responses, Patient Safety analyzed “failing or poor” vs. “excellent, very good, or acceptable” as binaries. This measure has been used previously in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Hospital Survey on patient safety culture [ 29 ]. Feedback is essential for understanding the needs, expectations, and satisfaction of VVS, as well as identifying areas for improvement and opportunities for the next scaling-up training, which was guided by a question, “What would you provide the feedback on using VVS?".…”

“…This correlational research is based on cross-sectional data, using the Bosnian adaption of the “Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture for Bosnia and Herzegovina” (HSOPSC-BiH). 49 Between September 2016 and February 2017, the survey was conducted in 9 hospitals in as many cities in BiH. The questionnaires were paper based as the insufficient technological infrastructure proved to be insufficient.…”

“…The survey was conducted using the HSOPSC-BiH, adapted from the HSOPSC and psychometrically tested based on empirical data from BiH. 49 The HSOPSC-BiH has 29 items across 9 factors: 4 unit factors (Supervisors and managers' expectations and actions promoting safety; Teamwork within units; Communication openness and feedback on errors; and Nonpunitive response to errors), three hospital factors (Hospital management support for patient safety; Teamwork across hospital units; and Hospital handoffs and transitions) and 2 outcome factors (Overall perceptions of safety and continuous improvement; and Frequency of event reporting). All items are based on 5-point Likert scale ratings ("strongly disagree" [1] to "strongly agree" [5]) or frequency ("never" [1] to "always" [5]).…”
