Green ears of maize are much appreciated all over Brazil and reach higher prices than dry grain. This also occurs with green cowpea grain, which is much appreciated in the north and northeast of the country. The aim of this study was to identify maize and cowpea cultivars that can be grown as monocrops or intercrops to produce green grain in the state of Pará (PA). An experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with six replications in Marabá, PA. Monocrops of traditional varieties of the cowpea ('Corujinha' and 'Sempre Verde') and the maize cultivars ('AG 1051' and 'AL Bandeirante'), and four alternating, intercropped rows of a combination of the varieties and cultivars were evaluated. The 'AG 1051' cultivar was more productive than the 'AL Bandeirante' cultivar, as both a monocrop and an intercrop. The cowpea cultivars showed a similar performance under both systems of cultivation. There was no interaction between the maize cultivars and cowpea cultivars. The monocrops were superior to the intercrops for green-ear, green-pod and green-grain yield. Considering the land equivalent ratio, if the aim is to produce green pods, intercropping is only beneficial in the AG 1051 + Corujnha combination. If the aim is for green-grain yield in the cowpea, intercropping is more advantageous when the 'AG 1051' cultivar is combined with any cowpea cultivar. The intercrop including the 'AL Bandeirante' cultivar is only beneficial with the 'Corujinha' cultivar, and if the aim is to market unhusked, green ears of maize.

There is interest in identifying the best maize and cowpea cultivars to be used in monocropped and intercropping systems for the production of dry grain. In order to meet this interest, two monocrops of cowpea (the traditional varieties, Corujinha and Sempre Verde) were evaluated with two monocrops of maize (the AG 1051 double hybrid and the AL Bandeirante variety) and four intercrops (combinations of the cowpea varieties and the maize cultivars). Under the intercropping systems, the maize and cowpea occupied alternating rows. A completely randomized block design with six replications was used. Grain growth and yield were higher in the AG 1051 hybrid than in the AL Bandeirante variety in both the monocropped and intercropping systems. For medium-sized maize grain, the growth and yield were higher in the monocrops than in the intercrops. It is unimportant which variety of cowpea, Corujinha or Sempre Verde, is used with each maize cultivar in the intercropping systems, as there was no interaction between the maize cultivars and the cowpea cultivars. In the monocropped systems, the grain yield of the Corujinha cultivar was greater than that of the Sempre Verde cultivar. Mean grain yield in the monocrops was greater than in the intercrops. Both cowpea cultivars showed better performance when intercropped with the AL Bandeirante maize cultivar than with the AG 1051 cultivar. The value of the land equivalent ratio was greater than 1.0 only for the combination of the AL Bandeirante variety of maize and the Sempre Verde variety of cowpea.

A agricultura envolve vários agentes durante todo o ciclo da cultura implantada, sendo os fatores edafoclimáticos, pragas e doenças os que possuem grande potencial de causar grandes percas. Os fatores climáticos podem provocar situações que venham a prejudicar o rendimento da lavoura. Em anos que ocorrem desequilíbrios climáticos a produção de grãos pode ser afetada negativamente em virtude da pluviosidade, que influência diretamente na manifestação dos fitopatógenos. A redução da produtividade no milho é causada principalmente pelas doenças fúngicas, doenças que variam de região para região, agindo com maior severidade conforme for o ambiente que o patógeno se encontra. Em regiões de cultivo de milho pelo Brasil, as percas relacionadas a doenças fúngicas, podridões e doenças foliares podem chegar a 80% de uma lavoura inteira. O trabalho demonstra como objetivo geral quais os principais patógenos que atingem diretamente a planta do milho, sintomas, e os métodos de controle. Os métodos de pesquisa utilizados foram o de pesquisa bibliográfica de caráter qualitativa, descritiva e exploratória. Observou - se durante a fundamentação do trabalho que, mesmo com a utilização de algumas cultivares que tenham a resistência contra patógenos existem gargalos em relação ao melhoramento genético com resistência aos fungos, o método vem sendo desvalorizado pelas empresas que desenvolvem melhoramento genético, que estão optando por trabalhos em cultivares que respondam com uma maior produtividade, restando poucas alternativas que é o caso do manejo químico que se encontra bastante limitado em quantidades de moléculas posicionadas para a cultura, promovendo situações onde o produtor necessita do uso continuo de determinada molécula ocorrendo assim, a seleção de resistência pelo fungo, aumentando sua vivência no ambiente e ampliando sua população.
