“…The concept of differentiated adamantinoma has been described by Czerniak et al [5], and several similar cases have been reported under other names such as "juvenile intracortical adamantinoma" [1,13,15,20,22]. In contrast to classic adamantinoma, this type of adamantinoma is characterized by its age distribution in the first and second decades, an intracortical location, OFD-like histology, and scattered small nests of cells reacting positively for cytokeratin [5].…”

“…Several authors have supported this idea [reviewed in Park et al, 1993]. Further support for a relationship between OFD and adamantinoma comes from the fact that it is not uncommon for OFD to recur after curetting, or even excision [Springfield et al, 1994], that OFD can frequently be shown to contain epithelial cells [Ishida et al, 1992;Sweet et al, 1992], and from scattered reports of patients whose OFD apparently progressed to an adamantinoma [Johnson, 1972;Schajowicz and Santini-Araujo, 1989;Durroux et al, 1993;Springfield et al, 1994]. Czerniak et al [1989] proposed that adamantinoma occurred in two forms; the classic malignant tumor, and a second that contained small, inconspicuous, epidermal foci, occurred in a younger age group, and resembled typical OFD.…”

“…The authors proposed that OFD could also develop de novo. Although a number of authors have lent their support to this hypothesis [Ueda et al, 1991;Gaubert and Durroux, 1995;Kuruvilla and Steiner, 1998], it has not gained universal acceptance [Schajowicz and Santini-Araujo, 1989;Park et al, 1993;Springfield et al, 1994]. A number of authors have provided immunohistologic evidence of cell types common to OFD and adamantinoma.…”
