AD-Frustum: Adaptive Frustum Tracing for Interactive Sound Propagation

Abstract: Abstract-We present an interactive algorithm to compute sound propagation paths for transmission, specular reflection and edge diffraction in complex scenes. Our formulation uses an adaptive frustum representation that is automatically sub-divided to accurately compute intersections with the scene primitives. We describe a simple and fast algorithm to approximate the visible surface for each frustum and generate new frusta based on specular reflection and edge diffraction. Our approach is applicable to all tri… Show more

“…The frustum tracing technique is such a variation, wherein frustum-shaped beams are loosely cut against reflecting polygons such that they retain their original rectangular cross-section. 36,133 Moreover, the adaptive frustum tracing is able to create frustums for diffracting edges, thus further enhancing the realism of the acoustic simulation. 36 The diffraction computation is based on the UTD principle.…”

“…Fast computer systems are the basis for generating room impulse responses in a short period of time, in optimized systems results can be provided even in real-time. Next to the application of room acoustics simulation for the designing process of a room, the reduced calculation times led to an application of room acoustics simulation and auralization in Virtual Reality 6 and can also be integrated in computer games 7 . Systems including room acoustics simulation are usually based on geometrical acoustics, the ray-based simulation techniques guarantee sufficient results in the mid and high frequency bands.…”

“…Many more works have been published in this area, which also concentrated on real-time rendering [4], or nongraphical applications such as audio rendering. Two examples for this are the works by Funkhouser et al [12] and Chandak et al [24].…”
