Acute Treatment of Stroke (Except Thrombectomy)

Abstract: Large definitive trials have provided insight into acute stroke care including broadening the therapeutic window for thrombolysis, alternatives to standard dose alteplase, the use of dual antiplatelet therapy early after minor ischemic stroke, and treating elevated blood pressure in intracerebral hemorrhage. Further ongoing and future trials are eagerly awaited in this ever-expanding area. Although definitive trials have led to improvements in acute stroke care, there remains a need for further research to imp… Show more

“…Treatments such as use of antiplatelet agents that improve the circulation result in changes in the brain microcirculation. Changes caused by reperfusion and increased blood volume in the local circulation increase the possibility of bleeding or aggravate damage to infarcted brain tissue (Campbell et al., 2015; Lansberg et al., 2012; Venturelli et al., 2018).…”

“…This is due to a better understanding of the disease and new potential therapies. Nevertheless, there is still a need for analyses of pathophysiological mechanisms depending on the type of stroke in order to personalize treatment [2]. Embolic stroke occurs when a blood clot that forms elsewhere is released from there and finally becomes stuck in a smaller brain vessel, causing an ischemic event.…”
