Acute Transverse Myelitis Associated With Human Parvovirus B19 Infection

Abstract: We describe severe acute transverse myelitis in a previously healthy 9-year-old boy in whom primary human parvovirus B19 infection was confirmed serologically and B19 DNA was detected in his serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Besides erythema infectiosum, parvovirus B19 infection has various clinical manifestations; however, central nervous system involvement is rare. Even more unusual is parvovirus B19-associated acute transverse myelitis.

“…No B19V pneumonia was diagnosed among our patients. Concerning neurological injury, B19V‐associated acute myelitis has been reported in two previous case reports among immunocompetent patients, 25,26 but our case if the first report in an alloHSCT recipient. In our patient, the chronological link between neurological symptoms and reticulocytopenia, as well as the high B19V PCR positivity in both blood and CSF argue in favor of its pathogenicity.…”
