“…However, it differed from the reports of Bobmanuel et al (2006) and Onusiriuka and Ufodike (1994) possibly due to the modes of action of the toxicants. The abnormal behavioural responses in fish exposed to L. alopecuroides were similar to that earlier reported by a number of authors (Onusiriuka and Ufodike, 1998;Oti, 2002;Koffi, 2005). These behaviours were in a bid to avoid/escape from the toxicants.…”

“…Although H. bidorsalis was more susceptible to the piscicide, the rate of mortality was slower than that for C. gariepinus, hence the higher MLT 50 value. Based on the 96hrLC 50 the extract appeared to be more toxic to the fish species in comparism with extracts of Akee apple, Blighia sapida and sausage plant, Kigelia africana (Onusiriuka and Ufodike, 1994;1998), textile effluents (Nwanna et al 2000), cassava effluents (Oti, 2002), insecticide, dimethoate (Auta et al 2004). The toxicity of the extracts had been demonstrated by Obomanu et al (2006) in mosquito larvae, mudskipper (Obomanu et al, 2006), tadpoles (Suleiman, 2006) and Gabriel, et al (2009).…”

“…Results of the regression of OBF on the concentration of the toxicant and time lend credence to the observation and claim by several authors that OBF is better tool for assessing acute toxicity of the plant extract than TBF based on the unit changed in each of these variables with that of the toxicant (Ekweozor et al, 2001;;Bobmanuel et al, 2006). This may explain why several authors prefer the use of obf to tbf in the study of stress responses of fish to the effects of toxicants, (Onusiriuka and Ufodike, 1994;Babatunde et al, 2000;Oti, 2002).…”

“…Studies on toxic effects of cyanide on aquatic life include Yang et al, (1994), Okafor (1998), Wade et al (2002), Oboh (2004), Abiona et al (2005) and Ehiagbonare et al (2009). Hydrocyanic acid (HCN) resulting from the processing of cassava tubers may lead to death of fish and other aquatic organisms (Oti, 2002;Oboh and Akindahunsi, 2003;Oboh, 2004). Suspended solids of effluents may settle on a stream bed and spoil fish breeding grounds (Arimoro et al, 2008).…”
