Acute Toxic Effects of Two Lampricides to Twenty-one Freshwater Invertebrates

Abstract: We conducted laboratory static bioassays to determine acute toxicity of two lampricides---a 70% 2-aminoethanol salt of 5,2'dichloro-4'-nitrosalicylanilide (Bayer 73) and a mixture containing 98% 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM) and 2% Bayer 73 (TFM-2B)--to 21 freshwater invertebrates. LC50 values were determined for 24-h exposure periods at 12.8 C. Organisms relatively sensitive to Bayer 73 were a turbellarian (Dugesia tigrina), aquatic earthworms (Tubilex tubilex and Lumbriculus inconstans), snails (Phys… Show more

“…Tubifex tubifex is more sensitive to Bayluscide and TFM than are most nontarget aquatic species, and the application rates commonly used to control nuisance species like lampreys, tadpoles, and snails are comparable to those that would be required for oligochaete worm control (Rye and King 1976;Kane and Johnson 1989;Francis-Floyd et al 1997). Bayluscide was more effective at lower concentrations, degraded more rapidly, and is more likely to be approved for this use.…”

“…Several common lampricides are much more toxic to oligochaete worms than to other aquatic organisms (Rye and King 1976). Bayluscide (5,2Ј-dichloro-4Ј-nitrosalicylanilide) has been used to control several invasive and nuisance aquatic organisms.…”
