Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and COVID-19: A Literature Review

Abstract: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is an overwhelming inflammatory disorder of the lung due to direct and indirect insults to the lungs. ARDS is characterized by increased vascular permeability, protein-rich edema, diffuse alveolar infiltrate, and loss of aerated lung tissue, leading to decreased lung compliance, tachypnea, and severe hypoxemia. COVID-19 is generally associated with ARDS, and it has gained prime importance since it started. The mortality rate is alarmingly high in COVID-19-related ARDS… Show more

“…According to the American-European Consensus Conference on acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the ARDS is the most severe form of the acute lung injury [ 17 ] as well as ongoing COVID-19 associated lethality [ 18 ]. Pulmonary capillary endothelium provides a fertile “soil” for viral entry, replication, thereby facilitating viral entry to the circulating blood [ 19 , 20 ].…”

“… 169 , 170 It is worth mentioning that corticosteroids may present different outcomes in ARDS subjects depending on several factors, including the timing of initiation of treatment, the origin of ARDS, type and dose of corticosteroid, and among others (for a review on corticosteroids and ARDS, see Hussain et al . 171 ).…”

“…Most notably, the lungs are a highly vulnerable organ wherein pulmonary inflammation and infection result in vascular leakage and thereby the development of ARDS 5,6 . Indeed, many patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), a newly emerging infectious disease of major concern, have developed ARDS, the main cause of mortality in those affected 7 …”

VE-cadherin-based AJs exist in two forms; stable linear AJs supported by circumferential actin bundles (CABs) and focal AJs connected by radial stress fibers (RSF).…”
