Acute prolonged motor aura resembling ischemic stroke after COVID − 19 vaccination (CoronaVac): the first case report

Abstract: Background We report the first case of a patient who suffered transient focal neurological deficit mimicking stroke following CoronaVac vaccination. However, instead of an ischemic stroke, motor aura was suspected. Case presentations A 24 year-old Thai female presented with left hemiparesis fifteen minutes after receiving CoronaVac. She also had numbness of her left arm and legs, flashing lights, and headaches. On physical examination, her BMI was … Show more

“…It has to be noted that, in our study, disease flares were responsible of the 57.1% of the serious AEs. In the remaining patients, we observed clinically significant AEs such as Bell’s palsy, acute myocardial infarction, acute ischemic stroke, lymphadenopathy and gastrointestinal bleeding [ 47 52 ]. These adverse reactions should be taken into caution with their background rates to assess the causality [ 53 ].…”

“…Of note, post-vaccination headache was found to be less severe and shorter than COVID-19-related headache [ 76 ]. There is one case reporting transient unilateral hemiparesis, sensory deficit, and visual phenomenon followed by headache and lasting 5 days without evidence of cerebral insult on brain imaging which was ultimately attributed to migraine pathology with cortical spreading depression [ 81 ]. Another report describes a case of new-onset visual aura phenomenon without headache, although this occurred 127 days after injection; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain and intracranial vessel imaging were normal [ 82 ].…”

“…The first case report of stroke-like symptomology occurring after CoronaVac vaccination reported to the Ministry of Public Health was proposed to be an acute prolonged motor aura [ 8 ]. However, most later patients did not develop headaches.…”
