Acute-phase reactant protein profiles: an aid to monitoring large bowel cancer by CEA and serum enzymes

Abstract: Summary.-The profiles of 4 acute-phase reactant proteins (APRPs) (haptoglobin (HPT)-, a, antitrypsin (AAT), al acid glycoprotein (AGP) and prealbumin (PALB)) have been studied during the evolution of bowel cancer. Serial measurements of these APRPs can add to the information obtained from measurements of the level of CEA and hepatic enzymes during the monitoring of postoperative patients. There is considerable stability in the profile in a given individual in health. Rises of AAT and AGP are associated with me… Show more

“…However, changes in serum levels which tollow a distinct pattern as detected by serial measurements in a single patient might reflect tumour growth. This approach was recently advocated in the literature and promising results in some patients with colorectal cancer [13,14], breast cancer [15] and neuroblastoma [16] have been claimed. In the present investigation three APR (cq-acid glycoprotein, haptoglobin and C-reactive protein) and three CC (C4, C3-proactivator, and C9) have been determined in a longitudinal fashion in 20 patients with invasive cervical carcinoma.…”

“…However, the prognostic significance of slightly raised levels of CEA is still debatable (Goslin et al, 1980;Blake et al, 1982;Steel et al, 1982). A combination of CEA and acute phase reactant proteins (APRPs) have been used in the pre-operative assessment of stomach cancer (Rashid et al, 1982) and colorectal cancer (Ward et al, 1977) and their value assessed by multivariate analysis. This experience suggests that the combination of tumour-associated factors, such as CEA, and various non-specific reactions to the presence of tumour, constitute a better set of prognostic indicators than any of these factors when used alone.…”

“…AAG is an acutephase reactant and is primarily synthesized in the liver. AAG concentrations are known to increase in plasma after surgery, 6 myocardial infarction, 7 renal transplantation, 8 malignancy, 9 trauma, 10 and inflammatory arthritis. 11 Increased binding of certain basic drugs, such as propranolol 11 and lidocaine, 7 has been observed in patients with high AAG concentrations.…”
