COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that in the majority of patients will only cause mild symptoms. The most common serious complication is COVID-19 pneumonia, however, gastrointestinal (GI) COV-ID-19 is also a frequent presentation and likely due to the high expression of the ACE2 receptor in the GI tract. As diagnostic ultrasound has been frequently used in the management of this patient cohort, we conducted a literature search with the aim to present and review the currently published evidence of using ultrasound examinations in the management of intraabdominal manifestations of COVID-19. Our analysis showed that sonographic abnormalities of the hepatobiliary system are the most commonly reported findings in adults, while gastrointestinal abnormalities are the most common findings in children. The most severe complications are related to thromboembolic complications in the intensive care unit.

As crianças de todas as idades podem se contaminar pelo COVID-19, particularmente aquelas com menos de 12 a 14 anos de idade, parecem ser afetadas menos comumente do que os adultos, embora as crianças normalmente tenham um risco menor de exposição do que os adultos e sejam testadas com menos frequência do que os adultos, a incidência de contaminação em crianças aumenta com o aumento da idade. As crianças de todas as idades podem transmitir SARS-CoV-2 para outras, mas a taxa de transmissão por crianças pequenas é incerta. As crianças mais velhas e adolescentes transmitem SARS-CoV-2 efetivamente em ambientes domésticos e comunitários. As crianças infectadas eliminam o vírus SARS-CoV-2 com cargas virais nasofaríngeas comparáveis ou superiores às dos adultos. As cargas virais e o risco de transmissão parecem ser maiores em indivíduos sintomáticos do que assintomáticos.

The global pandemic infectious disease that was named the new coronavirus disease (COVID 19), spread throughout the world, causing a major public health emergency. The causative virus of COVID-19, called SARS CoV-2, can infect all age groups. Various clinical signs and symptoms have been observed in neonates, children, and adolescents during the COVID-19 outbreak. The clinical manifestations of COVID-19 might be different due to the medical conditions and comorbid status in elderly and pediatric patients. The rise in cases among children has been reported during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although infected children generally appear to be asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms, COVID-19 in children may also involve a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic carriers to life-threatening and fatal diseases, as COVID-19 is a systemic disease that can affect multiple organs. Due to the lack of knowledge in the current literature, it is necessary to describe the atypical clinical features, including extrapulmonary manifestations, in pediatric patients with COVID-19. This review is conducted to identify knowledge gaps regarding the broad spectrum of clinical signs and symptoms of children with COVID-19.
