Acute pancreatitis following renal allotransplantation

Abstract: Since first described by Starzl in 1964 (1), acute pancreatitis following renal homotransplantation has been the subject of sporadic reports and reviews (2-5). The generally reported incidence has been around 2%, with a mortality rate of 50-60%. A recent experience with such a patient caused us to retrospectively analyze our own series of renal transplant recipients. In an eight-year period, there were six patients who had documented pancreatitis out of a total 120 renal homograft recipients, an incidence of 5… Show more

“…In our 5th patient pancreatitis may have been secondary to cytomegalovirus infection and not bil iary calculi. In our patients the incidence of biliary calculi is higher than in previous reports [3,9]; however, the average age of these 3 patients is 55 years, which is greater than most cases reported. As the maximum age of pa tients undergoing renal transplantation has steadily been rising, an increasing incidence of biliary calculi will be encountered.…”

“…It occurs in ap proximately 2% of renal transplants at any time from the immediate postoperative period to many years later [1], The mortality is high and is generally reported at over 60% [2,3]. Various aetiologies have been suggested although a specific cause has not been identified.…”

“…Pancreatitis following renal transplantation is reported to occur in 0.4 YO-7.0 YO of all cases and to have a mortality of 20% [8,38]. Etiological factors suggested include immunosuppressive medications, viral infections, postoperative hyperparathyroidism, and vasculitis [12,28, 29,351. In our group, the use of azathioprine and prednisolone may have predisposed patients to pancreatitis.…”

“…Acute pancreatitis, after renal transplantation, was first described by Starzl in 1964 (7). The reported incidence has ranged from 1.2% to 6.8%, a rate much higher than that observed in the general population, and with a mortality rate of 10-60% (1,(7)(8)(9).…”
