Acute pancreatitis and hyperparathyroidism: A case series

Abstract: Primary hyperparathyroidism is a rare cause of acute pancreatitis. Five consecutive patients with acute or recurrent acute pancreatitis and primary hyperparathyroidism were included. All patients had elevated serum calcium on admission and high levels of circulating parathyroid hormone. Both ultrasonography and Sestamibi scan was used to localize parathyroid adenoma. “…The frequency of pancreatitis associated with hyperparathyroidism in patients of 20-70 years of age has been reported to range from 1.5% to 15.3% ( 5 , 6 ). Hyperparathyroidism is often only discovered after two or three episodes of recurrent pancreatitis ( 7 , 8 ). Similarly, in this case, the patient had a history of pancreatitis; however, she had not been diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism prior to the present admission.…”

“…There are numerous causes of acute pancreatitis (22-44) ( Table 1 ) including alcohol ingestion, biliary tract disease (gallstones/malignancy), surgery/postoperative states (45), trauma (36), metabolic disorders (hypertriglyceridemia, hypercalcemia)(46-49), infections (adenovirus, mumps, ascariasis, mycoplasma) (44, 50), and drugs (the most common include thiazides, sulfa, methyldopa, and procainamide) (51, 52). Malignancies of the pancreas and bile ducts may result in pancreatitis due to obstruction/stenosis of the exocrine pancreatic ducts (53-57).…”
