Acute myeloid leukaemia associated with Muir‐Torre variant of hereditary non‐polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC): implications for inherited and acquired mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes

Abstract

are a popular nutritional supplement in cancer patients. The most widely used compounds, selenomethionine and methylselenocysteine, are also metabolized to methylselenol and would therefore be expected to show a similar interaction with bortezomib. The recommended daily Se intake of 60 and 75 lg in women and men respectively results in a plasma Se concentration of around 1 lmol/l. The recommended supplement dose of up to 400 lg/d clearly has the potential to markedly elevate serum Se concentration. Patients with MCL who are receiving bortezomib should therefore be advised to avoid taking Se supplements. Whether this observation can be extended to other tumour types is under investigation.
