Acute Kidney Injury in COVID-19

Abstract: COVID-19 is mainly considered a respiratory illness, but since SARS-CoV-2 uses the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 receptor (ACE2) to enter human cells, the kidney is also a target of the viral infection. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is the most alarming condition in COVID-19 patients. Recent studies have confirmed the direct entry of SARS-CoV-2 into the renal cells, namely podocytes and proximal tubular cells, but this is not the only pathomechanism of kidney damage. Hypovolemia, cytokine storm and collapsing gl… Show more

“…Serum creatinine derived from phosphocreatine during energy-producing processes in muscles, brain, and myocardium is effectively eliminated in kidneys from the blood circulation system. An abnormally elevated creatinine level in blood indicates poor clearance of creatinine, malfunction of kidneys, and possible progression of kidney disease due to insufficient detoxification of the organism in acute or chronic inflammation [ 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 ].…”

“…This could be associated with possible protein leakage and albuminuria. SARS-CoV-2 can directly infect the renal parenchyma and induce renal damage, which may be associated with a spectrum of renal manifestation ranging from mild protein leakage to collapsing glomerulopathy [ 43 45 ]. Our findings suggest that albuminuria is only a short-term complication of mild COVID-19, as our multivariable repeated measures showed minor fluctuations of serum albumin at 3- and 6-month post-infection that were statistically not significant.…”

“…We are seeing emergent evidence that treatment for one variant does not necessarily work on another – look especially at the recent outbreak related to the delta variant in Israel where vaccination rates were very high. The Covid-19 virus has been documented to cause over 60 different symptoms across 10 different bodily systems, 2 affecting tissues such as pulmonary, renal, intestinal, vascular and neural, 3 , 4 , 5 producing a wide range of different short and long terms problems. It can also cause immune system dysregulation, trigger abnormal inflammatory processes.…”
