Acute Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis: Survival Analysis and the Prognostic Indicators

Abstract: Palatal involvement was associated with a higher mortality in our study. Also, leukocyte counts, neutrophile counts, and CRP values had a significant impact on survival function. The reversal of the underlying disease and immunosuppression is as important as the medical and surgical treatment.

“…This may have been observed because patients with higher HbA1c% had a more reversible and treatable cause of immunosuppression (eg, hyperglycemia), but this warrants further investigation. CRP was not significantly correlated with survival, in contrast to other studies . However, only 16% of our patients had CRP data available for analysis.…”

“…Multiple series of invasive fungal sinusitis report mortality rates in excess of 50% in immunocompromised populations regardless of the cause of immune compromise [1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 27, 55, 71]. In our review of HIV-infected patients, the mortality was 80% and 73% in paranasal and mastoid sinus IA, respectively.…”
