Acute infectious bursal disease in poultry: Isolation and characterisation of a highly virulent strain

Abstract: SUMMARYA highly virulent strain of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) was isolated from the field and propagated in SPF chickens, causing up to 100% mortality. Although it still belongs to the standard serotype 1 IBD viruses, serological typing with monoclonal antibodies showed an antigenic drift in this pathogenic strain. Conventional 'intermediate' IBD vaccines are probably more antigenically related to the pathogenic strain than the mild ones and were effective in protecting SPF chickens against challen… Show more

“…Almost simultaneously with the vaIBDV emergence, vvIBDVs emerged in Europe and caused a very severe form of the disease with unusual high mortality (Chettle et al, 1989;van den Berg et al, 1991). These vvIBDVs were antigenically similar to the cIBDVs, but they were able to breakthrough the existing level of maternally derived protection (van den Berg et al, 1996).…”

“…18 Outbreaks with high mortality rates caused by very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV) strains have been reported in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. 21 Subclinical and immunosuppressive forms of the disease are prevalent in the United States, where reduction of body weight and lack of uniformity may be produced in mild outbreaks. 13 Real-time RT-PCR (rt-RT-PCR) has been used previously to detect IBDV in tissues of infected chickens that were either frozen or stored in phenol.…”

“…Until 1987, most of the IBDV infections were subclinical, and the major problem was impaired growth and acquired immunodeficiency (classical IBD). Since 1987, an increasing number of acute cases of IBD with high mortality (highly virulent IBD) has been reported in many countries [4,30].…”
