Despite the widespread use of herbicide glyphosate in cultivation, its extensive runoff into rivers and to coastal areas, and the persistence of this chemical and its main degradation product (aminomethylphosphonic acid, AMPA) in the environment, there is still little information on the potential negative effects of glyphosate, its commercial formulation Roundup® and AMPA on marine species. This study was conducted with the aim of providing a comparative evaluation of the effects of glyphosate-based and its derived chemicals on the larval development of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus, thus providing new data to describe the potential ecotoxicity of these contaminants. In particular, the effects on larval development, growth and metabolism were assessed during 48 h of exposure from the time of egg fertilization. The results confirm that AMPA and its parent compound, glyphosate have similar toxicity, as observed in other marine invertebrates. However, interestingly, the Roundup® formulation seemed to be less toxic than the glyphosate alone.

The current research was conducted to examine the effect of Artemisia dracunculus (AD) extract on growth performance, haemato‐immunological, biochemical parameters, and mucosal immunity in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The fish were fed with a diet supplemented with 0 (control), 1%, 2% and 3% AD for 8 weeks. The findings indicated that in all groups fed AD, especially at the 2% level, the growth parameters and survival rate significantly increased compared with the control group. Blood biochemical parameters, creatinine, glucose, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and triglyceride were decreased significantly in AD‐treated groups. Total serum protein (TSP) levels, lysozyme (LYZ) and respiratory burst activities (RBA) were increased in the fish fed with AD. TSP levels, ALP and protease (PA) activities in the mucus were significantly increased following fish fed with AD. Increased in the total immunoglobulins (Ig) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were observed in the fish fed with 3% AD. Fish fed with 2% AD showed the highest levels of alternative complement (ACH50) significantly. In addition, the mucus bactericidal activity was significantly increased in some treatments fed AD diet against Lactococcus garvieae and Aeromonas hydrophila. After infection with Yersinia ruckeri, there was a reduction in the mortality rate in the AD‐fed groups compared with the control group. Thus, it can be concluded that diets supplemented with AD can significantly impact diverse physiological parameters in fish, improving their growth performance, blood biochemical parameters and immune response.

Methylene blue (MB) can have inhibitory effects against protozoan and fungi in fish. In this investigation, fish were first exposed to different MB concentrations (0 and 2 mg L−1) for 21 days. Then, the fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila for 7 days. Some haemato‐immunological and biochemical parameters, oxidative stress biomarkers in blood, growth performance and fish resistance to A. hydrophila were examined once a week. The results showed that erythrocyte, haemoglobin, leucocytes, haematocrit, mean corpuscular volume., mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and lymphocyte percentage significantly reduced in the fish after exposure to 2 mg L−1 MB on the 14th and 21st days and challenged period on 28th day. Although the superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, lysozyme, phagocytic activities and a quantitative nitroblue tetrazolium, total protein and cellular total antioxidant levels in the serum decreased significantly, the percentage of neutrophils, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase activities increased significantly in fish exposed to 2 mg L−1 MB (p < 0.05). There was a significant difference in the growth performance and the percentage of monocytes exposed to 2 mg L−1 of MB compared to the reference group. The mortality rate was declined in the treated fish with 2 mg L−1 of BM after challenge with A. hydrophila compared with the control group. Overall, the present results indicate some negative impacts of MB application in goldfish even at the therapeutic level. From these, the immunosuppressive effects of MB may be potentially disruptive for a health condition.
