Until the 1970's, tracheostomy was the usual method of maintaining the airway during acute epiglottitis (Berenberg and Kevy, 1958;Baxter, 1967;Addy etal, 1972); but with the development of intensive care facilities, endotracheal intubation has replaced tracheostomy as the method of choice in most reports (Allen and Steven, 1972;Battaglia and Lockhart, 1975;Bryne et al, 1977;Downey et al, 1972;Enoksen et al, 1979;Milko et al, 1974;Tos, 1973).
