Acute Effects of Tetracycline Exposure in the Freshwater Fish Gambusia holbrooki: Antioxidant Effects, Neurotoxicity and Histological Alterations

Abstract: A large body of evidence was compiled in the recent decades showing a noteworthy increase in the detection of pharmaceutical drugs in aquatic ecosystems. Due to its ubiquitous presence, chemical nature, and practical purpose, this type of contaminant can exert toxic effects in nontarget organisms. Exposure to pharmaceutical drugs can result in adaptive alterations, such as changes in tissues, or in key homeostatic mechanisms, such as antioxidant mechanisms, biochemical/physiological pathways, and cellular dama… Show more

“…It was found at 295 μg kgG 1 after 10 days of continuous medication with the dosage of 75 mg kgG 1 . So, after 10 days all residues are not eliminated properly and substantial alteration were recorded in both kidney and liver tissues (Elia et al, 2014) and functioned as prooxidant (Nunes et al, 2015). Our finding indicates the same results we found all residues eliminated after 45 days from end of medication feeding (Fig.…”

“…5-6). Exposure to drug oxytetracycline could result in adaptive alterations, changes in tissue and cellular damages (Nunes et al, 2015). Liver tissue specimens of the control group show normal hepatocytes and sinusoidal architectures (Fig.…”

“…Azithromycin and erythromycin orally administrated to salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha did not cause histopathologically significant lesions in the any tissue including gills, liver and kidney (Fairgrieve, Masada, McAuley, Peterson, Myers & Strom ); nevertheless, cytoplasm vacuolization, cellular hypertrophy and focal necrosis in renal tubules caused by erythromycin were reported in the some species (Kiryu & Moffitt ; Moffitt & Kiryu ). Fumagilin caused focal hepatic and kidney necrosis in O. mykiss ( Laurén, Wishkovsky, Groff, Hedrick & Hinton ); tetracycline caused numerous histopathology, including necrosis, in the gills and liver of Gambusia holbrooki (Nunes, Antunes, Gomes, Campos, Braga, Ramos & Correia ); oxytetracycline caused necrosis in the renal tubules and hematopoietic tissue of anterior kidneys in Tinca tinca (Soler, Reja, García‐Rubio, Míguez & Roncero ) and Cyprinus carpio (Svobodová, Sudová, Nepejchalová, Cervinka, Vykusová, Modrá & Kolárová ), but no change in kidney histology was detected in Piaractus mesopotamicus (Carraschi, Cruz, Machado Neto, Ignácio, Barbuio & Machado ). These data suggest that the toxic effects of a given therapeutic compound vary with specie sensitivity.…”

“…A large number of previous projects developed by our work team used fish collected at this same locations, without much variation among biological responses measured (see Brandão et al 2013;Nunes et al 2014Nunes et al , 2015. Being field organisms, all efforts were made (separation of males and immature females with the required size/age from the rest of the animals, and above all, a period of acclimatization/quarantine/depuration) to ensure results homogeneity (see below).…”
