Acute Effects of Resistance Exercise and the Use of GH or IGF-1 Hormones on Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Markers in Bodybuilders

Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine the influence of peptide hormone use on oxidative stress and antioxidant responses to a single session of resistance exercise in male bodybuilders. Forty-five male bodybuilders were divided into three groups: bodybuilders using growth hormone for at least 1 year (i.e., 3 to 4 times in the year) (GH-user, n = 15), bodybuilders using insulin-like growth factor-1 for at least 1 year (i.e., 3 to 4 times in the year) (IGF-1-user, n = 15), and peptide hormone-free bodybuilders (N… Show more

“…aerobic intermittent training decreases expression levels of Mda and inflammatory factors in serum and increases those of CAT and GSH (42). The concentration of GSH peroxidase, Glu and Mda in the serum of athletes increases along with expression levels of TnF-α, whereas those of caT decrease following anti-gravity exercise (43). The in vivo experiment showed that expression levels of angii and Mda in the serum increased, those of caT, T-aoc and GSH decreased and expression of TnF-α protein in the blood vessels and myocardium increased in the eX group.…”

“…These properties may contribute to the incidence of growth retardation since it involves immune dysfunction, antioxidant, and metabolic (hormonal) system (34). Antioxidant was shown to enhance the activity of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1; Figure 1) and its receptors (35), while growth hormones also reduce oxidative stress (36). An improvement in immunity will result in a good cellular metabolism through the activation of rapamycin (mTORC1 and mTORC2; Figure 1) which promote protein synthesis, glycolysis, mitochondrial functions, and lipid synthesis (37).…”
