Acute effects of lithium on dopaminergic responses: Iontophoretic studies in the rat visual cortex

Abstract: The interactions between lithium and cortical dopaminergic receptors were investigated using the iontophoretic technique to record and apply dopaminergic compounds, GABA, acetylcholine and LiCl on neurons in the primary visual cortex of the rat. The main responses to dopamine (DA) or to the D1 agonist (+/- )SKF38393 on spontaneously-active (SA) or visually-driven (VD) units was a prolonged decrease in firing and a reduction in the responsiveness to pulses of acetylcholine. The D1 antagonist SCH23390, applied i… Show more

“…The lack of DAergic effects upon local application is contrary to the inhibitory responses observed earlier [21,22]. Although DA can exert different actions depending on concentration [13], none of the DA concentrations used in this study changed the amplitude or SNR of the visually evoked responses.…”

“…It has been suggested that mesocortical dopaminergic inputs play a role in the mPFC and the sensory cortex (Bradshaw et al 1985;Gottberg et al 1988;Parkinson 1989;Reyes et al 2002). Dopaminergic fibers have been found in the AC (Campbell et al 1987;Harper and Wallace 1995;Goldsmith and Joyce 1996).…”
