Acute effects of cigarette smoking on left ventricular diastolic function

Abstract: Cigarette smoking increases coronary resistance in patients with coronary artery disease, causing profound disturbances in myocardial perfusion. The acute effects of smoking a single cigarette on left ventricular diastolic function were studied in 20 smokers with typical angina pectoris and angiographically documented coronary artery disease. Twenty healthy smokers served as a control group. We used simultaneous M-mode echocardiography of the mitral and aortic valves to measure isovolumic relaxation time, and … Show more

“…The acute adverse effects of smoking on myocardial relaxation were originally observed in coronary artery disease patients [14], with acute impairment of coronary vasomotion implicated as the main cause [15]. Such effects on diastolic function are also detected in healthy smokers [5-7] Cigarette smoke contains significant amounts of free radicals, promoting oxidative stress and inflammation [16] At the cellular level, decreased function of myocardial mitochondria [17] and DNA damage [18] has been observed.…”

“…Endothelial cell dysfunction is an early feature of atherosclerosis and is also implicated in the genesis of glomerular injury. Disturbed active vasodilation is also deleterious for coronary arteries [86, 87]and might be important in the genesis of altered renal hemodynamics and renal functional parameters of smokers [68, 88, 89, 90]. …”

“…The Doppler diastolic indexes had satisfactory reproducibility [14], A cross-sectional parasternal view was used just beyond the mitral valve to obtain M-mode recordings for each subject at end-expiration. A mean value of four to six cardiac cycles was calculated for the estima tion of the different variables.…”
