Purpose To assess the additive effect of diquafosol tetrasodium on sodium hyaluronate monotherapy in patients with dry eye syndrome. Methods This study evaluated 64 eyes of 32 patients (age: 62.6±12.8 years (mean±SD)) in whom treatment with 0.1% sodium hyaluronate was insufficiently responsive. The eyes were randomly assigned to one of the two regimens in each patient: topical administration of sodium hyaluronate and diquafosol tetrasodium in one eye, and that of sodium hyaluronate in the other. Before treatment, and 2 and 4 weeks after treatment, we determined tear volume, tear film breakup time (BUT), fluorescein and rose bengal vital staining scores, subjective symptoms, and adverse events. Results We found a significant improvement in BUT (P ¼ 0.049, Dunnett test), fluorescein and rose bengal staining scores (P ¼ 0.02), and in subjective symptoms (P ¼ 0.004 for dry eye sensation, P ¼ 0.02 for pain, and P ¼ 0.02 for foreign body sensation) 4 weeks after treatment in the diquafosol eyes. On the other hand, we found no significant change in these parameters after treatment in the control eyes. Conclusions In dry eyes, where sodium hyaluronate monotherapy was insufficient, diquafosol tetrasodium was effective in improving objective and subjective symptoms, suggesting its viability as an option for the additive treatment of such eyes.

The synthesis of biogenic nanoparticles from non-chemical resources has increased the drive toward understanding infection biology. Accordingly, we aimed to address the symbiotic antibiofilm effect of biogenic copper and zinc oxide nanoparticles with antimicrobials against multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) at the range from 2 to 128 lg/ml was calculated against Grampositive and Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria using a broth dilution method. Both nanoparticles have prime antibacterial activity compared with standard antibiotics (excluding against P.aeruginosa MTCC 741). A qualitative assessment of biofilm formation and collegial effect was performed using a modified test tube and the microtiter plate-based method by measuring the optical density and time kill of nanoparticles. The results demonstrated efficient antibiofilm activity of CuNPs in its lowest concentration than ZnONPs and antibiotics itself. In addition, significant enhancing antibiofilm effect was also shown by CuNPs in the presence of third generation antibiotics against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was used to investigate the effect of the nanoparticles on morphological changes of Staphylococcus aureus. Current data highlights, biogenic CuNPs and ZnONPs could be used as an adjuvant for antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections.

Zusammenfassung.Hintergrund: Die Hochfrequenzultraschallechographie mit B-Bild-Sonden zwischen 20 and 50 MHz ist eine etablierte Methode zur Beurteilung des vorderen Augensegments. Bislang befassten sich jedoch nur wenige Untersuchungen mit der echographischen bildgebenden Darstellung des ableitenden Tranenwegsystems. Wir untersuchten die proximalen Abschnitte der ableitenden Tranenwege mit einer hochfrequenten 20-MHz-Ultraschallsonde, um die Moglichkeiten bei der Identifizierung and bildgebenden Darstellung intrakanalikularer Tranenwegokklusive beurteilen zu konnen. Bislang stand kein geeignetes bildgebendes Verfahren zur Darstellung intrakanalikularer Tranenwegokklusive nach deren Platzierung im Kanalikulus zur Verfiigung.Methode: Es wurde bei 20 Patienten der proximale Abschnitt der ableitenden Tranenwege mit der Hochfrequenzsonographie untersucht. Bei alien Probanden waren auf Grund ausgepragter Benetzungsstorungen intrakanalikulare Tranenwegokklusive implantiert worden. Fur die bildgebende Darstellung der intrakanalikularen Implantate wurde ein 20-MHz-Sektorscanner am Ultraschalldiagnostikgerat I3 eingesetzt. Die Ultraschalluntersuchung erfolgte 1 bis maximal 24 Monate nach der Platzierung der intrakanalikularen Okklusive im Tranenkanal.Ergebnisse: Die in den proximalen Tranenwegen platzierten intrakanalikularen Okklusive konnten bei alien untersuchten Patienten mit der Hochfrequenzsonographie bildgebend erfasst werden. Verschiedene Tranenwegokklusive konnen auch intrakanalikular sonografisch an Hand ihrer Grol3e, Form and des Materials unterschieden werden. Intrakanalikulare Tranenwegimplantate aus Silikon sind erkennbar an Hand des starken Grenzflachenechos and der gleichzeitig hohen Binnenreflektivitat. Im Gegensatz hierzu unterscheiden sich Acrylimplantate durch eine niedrige Binnenreflektivitat, das schmale hohe Grenzflachenecho and ein anderes Formverhalten.Schlussfolgerungen: Die Hochfrequenzsonographie, namentlich mit dem einfach handhabbaren 20-MHz-Sektorscanner, kann sehr hilfreich sein intrakanalikulare Tranenwegokklusive nachzuweisen. Wenn anamnestische Angaben, klinische Daten oder biomikroskopische Befunde fehlen, bzw. nicht zu erheben sind, sollten Tranenwegokklusive mit dem 20-MHz-Ultraschall lokalisiert oder deren Nichtvorhandensein sonografisch nachgewiesen werden bevor die erneute Implantation erwogen wird.Schlusselworter: Ultraschall, Tranenwege, Hochfrequenzsonographie, Implantate.
