Acute Bacterial Meningitis

Abstract: Despite advances in medical care including antibiotics and vaccines, meningitis still has a high morbidity and mortality rate, especially in certain high-risk patients. Early diagnosis with the administration of appropriate antibiotics remains the key element of management. This article highlights methods of diagnosis, differential diagnoses, treatment options, and complications of treating bacterial meningitis.

“…As meningites bacterianas agudas (MBA) caracterizam-se por ser um processo infeccioso que acomete as leptomeninges e o espaço subaracnóideo 1 . Apesar dos cuidados intensivos e avanços na terapêutica, ainda são responsáveis por uma elevada taxa de morbimortalidade [2][3][4] , estando entre as 10 maiores causas de mortalidade por doenças infecciosas no mundo, principalmente na população pediátrica 5 .…”

“…While Haemophilus influenzae was previously the most frequent cause of acute bacterial meningitis in the United States, widespread vaccination against this pathogen has resulted in Streptococcus pneumoniae supplanting H. influenzae as the leading cause of bacterial meningitis. 1 Vaccination against S. pneumoniae is now reducing the incidence of central nervous system infections caused by this bacterium. 2 As the burden of pneumococcal meningitis wanes, a relative increase in the proportion of cases caused by other streptococci emerges.…”

“…Infectious meningitis can be further sub-divided to non-bacterial and bacterial (pyogenic) meningitis. Non-bacterial meningitis is typically caused by viral or fungal infections (Mace, 2008). Bacterial meningitis is characterized by the significant polymorph nuclear changes in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).…”
