Acute appendicitis as a rare complication after colonoscopy

Abstract: Complications due to colonoscopy are uncommon, and acute appendicitis is a very rare complication of colonoscopy. We present the case of an 83-year-old man who underwent colonoscopy and subsequently developed acute appendicitis. In patients with abdominal pain who have had a recent colonoscopy, a high index of suspicion is necessary for the accurate diagnosis of appendicitis. Colonoscopists should be aware of this rare complication and consider it when making a differential diagnosis of post-colonoscopy abdomi… Show more

“…One of the major potential concerns of performing ESD in the region of the appendiceal orifice is the development of post-ESD appendicitis. Previous reports have described appendicitis following routine colonoscopy without intervention [24,25], as well as appendicitis after cecal interventions, such as EMR [26].…”

“…6,24 Given that there will always be a concern about bowel injury/perforation that necessitate bowel resection, it is pertinent to explain to the patient before surgery. A few centers 9,11,16,18,19,22,27,[37][38][39]42 have attempted conservative management with intravenous antibiotics, but only half of them were successfully treated without requiring subsequent surgery. 11,18,22,37,38 Benatta reported success with endoscopic Post-colonoscopy appendicitis drainage of appendiceal pus on a re-look colonoscopy.…”

“…However, there are some case reports about acute appendicitis after EMR. 33 , 34 Furthermore, Jacob and colleagues 15 reported that 2 out of the 76 patients who underwent ESD for tumors near the appendiceal orifice experienced acute appendicitis after ESD, and that one case might have been caused by the clips used for closure of the ulcer bed during ESD. Therefore, it is important to explain to patients before ESD about the possibility of appendicitis and to prevent unnecessary clipping for the ulcer bed around the appendiceal orifice after ESD.…”
