“…Tests were performed at the following nominal concentrations: 5 µg a.i./L for fipronil and 500 µg a.i./L for 2,4-D prepared from a stock solution of 3.2 mg a.i./L and 1 g a.i./L, respectively. The concentrations of tested pesticides were chosen taking into account the ecological relevance of their environmental occurrence, after reviewing the literature for concentrations reported in surface waters and also based on the results of acute and chronic toxicity tests performed with these compounds to obtain dose-response curves for C. silvestrii (Silva et al 2020). Tests were performed in a semistatic manner, using treatment solutions that were renewed every 2 days.…”

“…To compare the sensitivity of the cladoceran species, used as the test organism to the fipronil pesticide with that of other species of invertebrates and vertebrates and also its sensitivity to the herbicide 2,4-D with that of primary producers and also invertebrates and vertebrates, species sensitivity distribution curves (SSD) were built using the NOEC (no observed effect concentration) values of the reproduction tests with C. silvestrii previously obtained in the study by Silva et al (2020) with the corresponding values for other species. Data used in the comparison were extracted mainly from the USEPA ECOTOX database (http://cfpub .epa.gov/ ecoto x/) and complemented with data from literature for phytoplankton, macrophytes, invertebrates and freshwater vertebrates, especially focusing on parameters for NOEC and EC 10 .…”

“…According to their specific mode of action, their toxicity is not so significant on some model organisms (such as bacteria or crustaceans), especially in time-and environmental concentration-dependent toxicity tests [53][54][55]. Recently, there have been growing concerns about the presence of herbicides in drinking water affecting non-target organisms.…”
