Acute Achilles Tendon Rupture

Abstract: The good Achilles Tendon Total Rupture Score in the nonsurgically managed group, together with the relatively low rate of re-ruptures and other complications in these patients, makes this treatment a preferable option for most patients. However, the tendency for a lower re-rupture rate and better performance on the heel-raise test in surgically treated patients suggest surgery may be beneficial in selected patients.

“…For example, wound complications following surgical repair of Achilles tendon rupture has led to a resurgence in nonsurgical "functional rehabilitation." 8,43,80,88 With these factors in mind, we have developed a list of standardized definitions (Appendix C, available online at http://fai.sagepub.com/supplemental) and a worksheet ( Figure 3) that could be incorporated into the submission process for outcomes research on total ankle arthroplasty. We propose that researchers could standardize and improve their reporting of adverse events by adhering to these definitions and completing the worksheet for all patients.…”

“… 8 The current series reflects a second peak of predominantly female patients. Bergkvist et al 1 recently suggested that elderly female patients may benefit more from surgical intervention. Cretnik et al’s 8 series of 14 ruptures in patients over 60 years of age had a mean AOFAS score of 93.1 points, whereas Maffulli et al’s 17 series suggested reduced functional outcome with an ATRS of 69.4 at a mean follow-up of 49 months.…”

“…A rupture of the Achilles tendon predominantly occurs in middle-aged males during sports activity, [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] with increasing incidence rates of as much as 69 per 100 000. 1 9 The greatest increases in incidence occur in the 40-60 and over 60 age groups.…”
