Acupuncture stimulation at GB34 suppresses 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-induced oxidative stress in the striatum of mice

Abstract: Recent studies have suggested that increased oxidative stress is a potential etiology in Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we investigated whether acupuncture regulates antioxidants in the striatum (ST) of a PD mouse model. Male C57BL/6 mice were administered 30 mg/kg of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) intraperitoneally once a day for 5 days and given acupuncture stimulation at SI3 or GB34 (Yanglingquan) was for 12 consecutive days. Dopaminergic neuronal survival in the nigrostriatal… Show more

“…In 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) rats, acupuncture at Yanglingquan (GB34), Taichong (LV3), Zusanli (ST36), and Xuehai (SP10) acupoints increased SOD and GSH-Px levels, reduced MDA level, and inhibited oxidative stress [ 79 ]. Moreover, in the striatum of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine- (MPTP-) treated mice, acupuncture at Yanglingquan (GB34) could enhance SOD and CAT activities [ 80 ]. High-frequency (100-Hz) EA at Zusanli (ST36) and Sanyinjiao (SP6) acupoints can reduce H 2 O 2 and MDA levels and increase SOD, GSH, and GSH-Px levels [ 81 ].…”

“…For the CCI model EA treatment group, the mouse received EA on the left “Huantiao” (GB30) and “Yanglingquan” (GB34) once a day, starting from the eighth day after operation. GB30 and GB34 were chosen based on their effect in improving inflammatory pain and neuropathic pain in mouse (Kang et al, 2007; Park et al, 2014; Lee et al, 2018). Two acupuncture needles were inserted 2–3 mm deep into two acupoints corresponding to GB30 and GB34 in humans.…”

“…It also enhances the availability of synaptic dopamine [16], decreases the effective dose of levodopa, and relieves side effects [17]. Thus, GB34 is an appropriate acupoint to treat PD [1821].…”
