IntroductionWhiplash injuries are common in society, but clinical interventions are inconclusive on the most effective treatment. Research and reviews have been completed with the goal of determining clinical interventions that are effective for whiplash injuries and disorders, but literature has not recently been summarised on best practices for cervical spine interventions for adults with chronic whiplash.PurposeThe objective of this narrative review is to update and expand on previous works, to provide recommendations for clinical interventions and future research in the area of cervical spine rehabilitation for adults with chronic whiplash-associated disorder.MethodThe Arskey and O’Malley methodology was used for this narrative review. CINHAL, EMBASE, Medline, PsychInfo, Scopus, Web of Science, as well as grey literature, were searched from 2003 to April 2017. Two reviewers screened titles and abstracts for relevance to the review, and content analysis summarised the study findings. A total of 14 citations were included in the final review.FindingsExercise-based interventions targeted at the cervical spine appear most beneficial for adults with chronic whiplash-associated disorder (WAD). Invasive interventions still require more rigorous studies to deem their effectiveness for this population.ConclusionFurther research is required to investigate and determine clinically relevant results for cervical spine intervention in patients with chronic WAD.

Background: Whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) is a common musculoskeletal condition that frequently occurs following a road traffic collision. Physiotherapy is often prescribed to help with the symptoms and injuries. Research evidence has demonstrated that acupuncture may be beneficial, but no studies have examined the routine clinical use of acupuncture by physiotherapists for treatment of WAD. Therefore, a physiotherapy service evaluation was conducted to examine the effects of acupuncture on WAD following a road traffic collision. Methods: This study involved 87 patients who attended a private physiotherapy practice following a road traffic collision after referral by their solicitor as part of a personal injury claim. Patients were included if they had been diagnosed with WAD (grades I–III) and received acupuncture as part of their treatment. An average of three sessions of acupuncture were received, which primarily involved needling of traditional acupuncture points and/or myofascial trigger points of the neck and upper/lower back. Results: Pain significantly reduced ( p < 0.001). Musculoskeletal outcome measures including neck disability index, Oswestry low back pain scale and Quick disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (Quick-DASH) scale also significantly improved (all p < 0.001). Adverse events were minor. The majority of the patients (n = 66) were able to return to full-work duties following treatment. Conclusion: Acupuncture appears to be an effective clinical treatment for WAD following a road traffic collision and should be considered by physiotherapists working with such patient groups.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of supine JS cervical therapy and muscle release/strengthening technique in patients with acute neck pain caused by traffic accidents. Methods We studied 42 patients with acute neck pain caused by traffic accidents from July 1, 2019 to November 30, 2019. The study was conducted as a retrospective study which analyzes the patient's medical records. 21 patients (group A) had received supine JS cervical therapy and 21 patients (group B) had received muscle release/strengthening technique. We used the neck disability index (NDI) and visual analog scale (VAS) to evaluate improvements in symptoms and pain, and used the five point Likert scale to evaluate patient's satisfaction with chuna manual therapy. In each group, we compared the NDI and VAS of hospitalization day to those of 5 days later. Then we compared the NDI, VAS variation and five point Likert scale between the groups. Statistical analysis was conducted using the IBM SPSS for windows 25.0. Result Both group A and group B showed a statistically significant decrease in the NDI and VAS on the 5th day of hospitalization. In group A, there was a statistically significant decrease in the NDI compared to group B. The VAS and Five Point Likert Scale decrease was greater in group A than in group B, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion We found that using supine JS cervical therapy may be more effective than muscle release/strengthening technique in acute stage after traffic accidents.
