Acupuncture for Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Patient-Reported Outcomes

Abstract: The present systematic review and meta-analysis was undertaken to evaluate the effects of acupuncture in women with breast cancer (BC), focusing on patient-reported outcomes (PROs).MethodsA comprehensive literature search was carried out for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting PROs in BC patients with treatment-related symptoms after undergoing acupuncture for at least four weeks. “…Thus, it is urgent to find a widely used, relatively safe, and well-accepted intervention. Both acupuncture and auricular acupressure (AA), as complementary and alternative treatment, might be promising treatment options, which appear to be effective in improving cancer-related insomnia ( 13 , 14 ). Acupuncture has been defined as the insertion of fine needles into specific acupuncture points (acupoints) in the human body to relieve certain symptoms, and AA is a non-invasive therapy of treating physical and psychosomatic diseases by stimulating specific points of ears with something ( 15 ).…”

“…Multiple clinical studies have confirmed the potential of acupuncture to treat anemia and leukopenia during chemotherapy ( 17 , 20 ), but the use and efficacy of EA are still moot because of the weak response in many patients. The mechanism of EA is still unknown and thus why it is effective in many patients but not in others with similar symptoms.…”

“…The World Health Organization recommends acupuncture to prevent toxicity and leukopenia during radio- and chemotherapy ( 16 ). Acupuncture is safe and its effects have been confirmed in multiple clinical trials with different types of tumors including breast ( 17 ) and lung cancer ( 18 ). Systematic analysis of 31 clinical trials showed that acupuncture alleviated chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression (leukopenia, hemoglobin, and platelet reduction) and preserved immune responses including IL-2 production and lymphocyte counts in lung cancer patients during chemotherapy ( 19 ).…”
