Acupuncture compared with placebo in post-herpetic pain

Abstract: A single blind randomised controlled study of auricular and body acupuncture compared with placebo (mock transcutaneous nerve stimulation) was performed in 62 patients with post-herpetic neuralgia. There was no difference in the amount of pain relief recorded in the two groups during or after treatment; 7 patients in the placebo group and 7 patients in the acupuncture group experienced significant improvement in their pain at the end of treatment. This suggests that acupuncture is of little value as an analges… Show more

“…Simultaneous needling in the center of painful area can relief pain [10]. Surrounding needling that in this method needle inserted at 2cm intervals subcutaneously at a15 degree angle horizontally around the rash of PHN, after insertion of filiform needles, small amplitude of lifting, thrusting, twirling and rotating was done.…”

“…Systemic corticosteroids, phenothiazine tranquilizers, tricyclic antidepressants, iontophoresis, ultrasound and acupuncture have been utilized for PHN with limited success (Kernbaum & Hauchecome 1981;Kepes 1983;KnijiharCsillik et al 1982;Lewith et al 1983;Watson et al 1982). Acyclovir has been shown to have a beneficial effect on acute pain during H Z infection, but not in H Z related PHN (Cobo et al 1986).…”

“…15 In a randomized study that compared acupuncture to sham transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS), using a blinded independent assessor, neither treatment resulted in improvement over baseline pain severity (class II). 57 This negates the two case series (class IV) showing benefit for acupuncture. 58,59 There were only class IV studies of He:Ne laser irradiation, nicardipine, chlorprothixene, biperiden, extract of Ganoderma lucidum, dorsal root entry zone lesions, stellate ganglion block, and vitamin E.…”
