The cross-disciplinary integration of acupuncture with modern medicine is an important guarantee to maintain its advantages. Based on 13896 acupuncture articles and 404726 references in the Web of Science Core Database, this paper analyzes the cross-disciplinary integration of acupuncture and modern medicine. It was found that the trend of cross-disciplinary integration between acupuncture and modern medicine is more and more obvious. Neurosciences, Anesthesiology, Oncology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Psychiatry, and Gastroenterology & Hepatology are the subjects with the most crossover and integration, accounting for 56% of the total disciplines. At the same time, more studies have begun to use modern medical methods to study the mechanism of acupuncture. Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Pharmacology & Pharmacy, and Medicine, Research & Experimental have been major areas of interdisciplinary collaboration in recent years. China, the United States, and South Korea are the three countries with the largest number of publications. Among them, Chinese scholars pay more attention to the role of acupuncture in the treatment of neurological diseases, Korean scholars pay more attention to drug acupuncture, especially bee venom acupuncture, and American scholars pay more attention to the role of acupuncture in pain management. However, acupuncture has less cross-disciplinary cooperation with heart and cardiovascular system, peripheral vascular disease, and even less with non-medical disciplines. Using modern medical technology and methods to carry out research on the mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion and strengthen the cooperation with informatics, statistics, physics and other disciplines may be an important direction for the modernization of acupuncture.

Objective The loss of neural ability leading to subsequent diminishing of motor function and the impairment below the location of the injury is a result of the SCI (Spinal Cord Injury). Among the many therapeutic agents for SCI, the exosomes considered as extracellular vesicles seem to be the most promising. Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) is an exosome-carrying protein. This Study's purpose was to identify whether Shh is required for exosomes from BMSCs (mesenchymal stem cells of the bone) and plays a protective effect on SCI. Methods Spinal cord injection with shRNA Shh-adeno associated virus (sh-Shh-AAV) were used to silence Shh. Exosomes were extracted from BMSCs. Rats that had suffered SCI were given intravenous injections of exosomes through the veins of the tail. Immunohistochemistry was used to identify the expression of Shh glycoprotein molecule as well as the expression of Gli-1 (glioma-associated oncogene homolog 1) in the rat spinal cord tissues. Western blot was performed to measure the levels of growth associated protein-43 (GAP-43). The BBB (Basso Beattie Bresnahan) score was used to assess the motor functions of the hind legs. In the same manner, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling or TUNEL and Nissl Staining was deployed to assess the level of regeneration of neurons and assess the level of histopathological damage in the tissues of the Spinal Cord. Results In the case of the rats with SCI, the levels of display of Gli-1 and Shh showed dramatic improvement after the BMSCs exosome injections. In comparison to rats with SCI, the subjects of BMSCs exosomes group showed an improvement in their SCI, including a higher BBB score and Nissl body count, increasing GAP-43 expression, along with a much-decreased number of cells that suffered apoptosis. While the exosome effect on Spinal Cord Injury was completely ineffective in rats that had Shh silencing. Conclusions Exosomes secreted from BMSCs showed great effectiveness in the SCI healing with a vital involvement of Shh in this repair.

Background Spinal cord injury (SCI), which reportedly induces severe motor dysfunction, imposes a significant social and financial burden on affected individuals, families, communities, and nations. Acupuncture combined with moxibustion (AM) therapy has been widely used for motor dysfunction treatment, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In this work, we aimed to determine whether AM therapy could alleviate motor impairment post-SCI and, if so, the potential mechanism. Methods A SCI model was established in mice through impact methods. AM treatment was performed in SCI model mice at Dazhui (GV14) and Jiaji points (T7-T12), Mingmen (GV4), Zusanli (ST36), and Ciliao (BL32) on both sides for 30 min once per day for 28 days. The Basso–Beattie–Bresnahan score was used to assess motor function in mice. A series of experiments including astrocytes activation detected by immunofluorescence, the roles of NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing-3 (NLRP3)–IL-18 signaling pathway with the application of astrocyte-specific NLRP3 knockout mice, and western blot were performed to explore the specific mechanism of AM treatment in SCI. Results Our data indicated that mice with SCI exposure exhibited motor dysfunction, a significant decrease of neuronal cells, a remarkable activation of astrocytes and microglia, an increase of IL-6, TNF-α, IL-18 expression, and an elevation of IL-18 colocalized with astrocytes, while astrocytes-specific NLRP3 knockout heavily reversed these changes. Besides, AM treatment simulated the neuroprotective effects of astrocyte-specific NLRP3 knockout, whereas an activator of NLRP3 nigericin partially reversed the AM neuroprotective effects. Conclusion AM treatment mitigates SCI-induced motor dysfunction in mice; this protective mechanism may be related to the NLRP3–IL18 signaling pathway inhibition in astrocytes.
