Actor-Network Theory

Abstract: Actor-network theory (ANT) is a methodology developed in the 1980s by scholars working primarily in the sociology of science and technology. It is a novel approach as it attempts to redefine actors not so much as willful or intentional agents but instead as any entity—human or nonhuman—that in some way influences or perturbs the activity of a techno-social system. Most effective when examining limited systems such as ship navigation, electrical network failures, and the like, ANT resists large generalizations … Show more

“…Actor-Network Theory (ANT) is a "process of heterogeneous engineering in which the social, technical, conceptual, and textual are puzzled together and transformed", which was primarily developed by Bruno Latour, John Law, and Michel Callon in the mid-1980s [2,3] (p. 472). Indeed, ANT can be considered as a collective sociotechnical activity.…”

“…ANT aims "to understand complex social situations by following actors and how they associate" [3] (p. 470). In ANT, the volitional actor, as Crawford notes with respect to the actant, is "any agent, collective or individual that can associate or dissociate with other agents" [2] (p. 1). Therefore, a network of relationships exists through which actants, human or non-human, acquire their names, substance, and activities.…”

“…In social research, network theory has become a gold mine as it offers theories of social processes in a wide range of fields, from psychology to economics [37]. The network theory perfectly illustrates that dominance is fundamentally hierarchical [38]. Methods of analysis of the social network offer some valuable methods to discuss the origins and transfer of power [39].…”
