Activity profile and physiological response to football training for untrained males and females, elderly and youngsters: influence of the number of players

Abstract: The present study examined the activity profile, heart rate and metabolic response of small-sided football games for untrained males (UM, n=26) and females (UF, n=21) and investigated the influence of the number of players (UM: 1v1, 3v3, 7v7; UF: 2v2, 4v4 and 7v7). Moreover, heart rate response to small-sided games was studied for children aged 9 and 12 years (C9+C12, n=75), as well as homeless (HM, n=15), middle-aged (MM, n=9) and elderly (EM, n=11) men. During 7v7, muscle glycogen decreased more for UM than … Show more

“…German veteran footballers are restricted to a certain minimum age typically, 30 or 32 years dependent upon the local federation. Recent studies have shown that recreational football can improve metabolic, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal parameters and can therefore be an effective tool to protect against certain lifestyle diseases (Krustrup, Aagaard, et al, 2010;Krustrup, Christensen, et al, 2010;Randers et al, 2010). However, playing also involves the risk of injuries Faude, Junge, Kindermann, & Dvorak, 2006;Junge & Dvorak, 2004;Peterson, Junge, Chomiak, Graf-Baumann, & Dvorak, 2000).…”

“…This would explain the increase of oxidative capacity measured in type II fibers observed in the past study of many authors; intermittent drills can result in increased glycolytic characteristics and ability to perform maximum efforts (Randers, et al 2010, Rebelo, et al, 2012). This study is based on the method of Periodization Training that refers to two important aspects: Periodization of the Season Plan, which allows players to split and manage the training program and to achieve maximum fitness for the most important games, Periodization of Motor-Conditional Skills which allows players to lead to an optimal level of conditional skills, such as strength, speed and endurance.…”
