Ricinuleids are considered one of the most enigmatic and neglected arachnid orders. The low diversity and poor local abundance of several species, makes the study of most aspects related to biology and behavior of this group very difficult. Most of the current knowledge related to ricinuleid biology relies on anecdotal observations. So far, no published studies exist that describe in detail ricinuleid behavior. Here we present the behavioral repertory of a ricinuleid, the Neotropical species Cryptocellus narino. Eighteen individuals (six males, six females and six immatures) were examined under laboratory conditions to describe and quantify their behavioral repertory and its variation along the day. The behavioral repertory in males exhibited a higher number of behavioral acts when compared to females and immatures. The most frequent J Insect Behav behavioral categories were "resting", "exploring" and "feeding". "Resting" was the most common behavior during the photophase, while "feeding" and "exploring" were the most common during scotophase, suggesting this species is predominantly nocturnal. This study also provides behaviors previously not known for this group as well as a description of the daily schedule. We expect this work will become a baseline study for further research on ricinuleid ethology.

We describe in this paper a new genus and species of cricetid rodent from the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, one of the most endangered eco-regions of the world. The new form displays some but not all synapomorphies of the tribe Oryzomyini, but a suite of unique characteristics is also observed. This new forest rat possesses anatomical characteristics of arboreal taxa, such as very developed plantar pads, but was collected almost exclusively in pitfall traps. Phylogenetic analyses of morphological (integument, soft tissue, cranial, and dental characters) and molecular [nuclear -Interphotoreceptor retinoid binding protein (Irbp) -and mitochondrial -cytochrome bgenes] datasets using maximum likelihood and cladistic parsimony approaches corroborate the inclusion of the new taxon within oryzomyines. The analyses also place the new form as sister species to Eremoryzomys polius, an Andean rat endemic to the Maranon valley. This biogeographical pattern is unusual amongst small terrestrial vertebrates, as a review of the literature points to few other similar examples of Andean-Atlantic Forest pairings, in hylid frogs, Pionus parrots, and other sigmodontine rodents.

Neosadocus harvestmen are endemic to the Southern Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Although they are conspicuous and display great morphological variation, their evolutionary history and the biogeographical events underlying their diversification and distribution are still unknown. This contribution about Neosadocus includes the following: a taxonomic revision; a molecular phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial and nuclear markers; an investigation of the genetic structure and species' diversity in a phylogeographical framework. Our results show that Neosadocus is a monophyletic group and comprises four species: N. bufo, N. maximus, N. robustus and N. misandrus (which we did not find on fieldwork and only studied the female holotype). There is astonishing male polymorphism in N. robustus, mostly related to reproductive strategies. The following synonymies have resulted from this work: Bunoweyhia variabilis Mello-Leitão, 1935 = Neosadocus bufo (Mello-Leitão, 1926); and Bunoweyhia minor Mello-Leitão, 1935 = Neosadocus maximus (Giltay, 1928). Most divergences occurred during the Miocene, a geological epoch marked by intense orogenic and climatic events in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Intraspecific analyses indicate strong population structure, a pattern congruent with the general behavior and physiological constraints of Neotropical harvestmen.
