Activity of Povidone in Recent Biomedical Applications with Emphasis on Micro- and Nano Drug Delivery Systems

Abstract: Due to the unwanted toxic properties of some drugs, new efficient methods of protection of the organisms against that toxicity are required. New materials are synthesized to effectively disseminate the active substance without affecting the healthy cells. Thus far, a number of polymers have been applied to build novel drug delivery systems. One of interesting polymers for this purpose is povidone, pVP. Contrary to other polymeric materials, the synthesis of povidone nanoparticles can take place under various c… Show more

“…Polymers based on N-vinylpyrrolidone derivatives are widely used in various medical devices and preparations, including the blood-retina nanocarrier platforms [33] and bioprinting [34]. PVP is used in drug delivery systems as a coating ingredient or in nanocarriers for the delivery of low-molecular-weight and hydrophobic drugs [8,35]. PVP is well-suited for bioconjugation as a drug carrier with a narrow molecular weight distribution [36].…”

“…A number or polymeric micelles with active tumor-targeting properties were proposed for drug delivery, for example, c(RGDyK)-linked poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate)-poly(crcaprolactone)-based [ 5 ], cRGD-conjugated poly(ethylene glycol)- b -poly( l -glutamic acid)-based [ 6 ], citric acid-functionalized poly(ε-caprolactone)-based micelles [ 7 ]. Poly( N -vinylpyrrolidone) is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, eco-friendly, FDA-approved biocompatible water-soluble polymer with a rather long history of pharmaceutical use [ 8 ]. Amphiphilic poly( N -vinylpyrrolidone) derivatives (Amph-PVP) self-aggregate in aqueous solutions with the formation of micellar nanoscaled structures, which are capable to entrap various therapeutic molecules under mild conditions [ 9 ].…”

“…In the last decade, interest has arisen in carriers based on poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) [ 11 , 12 ]. Like PEG, PVP has a very long history of medical use [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…As it is non-toxic and biocompatible, PVP is used extensively in the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries [ 33 ]. It has been employed in the development of a variety of drug delivery systems, including oral, ophthalmic, topical, and transdermal delivery in a variety of formats, such as particles, hydrogels, and fibers [ 32 , 34 ]. PVP can also be used to create clear, thin, and well-distributed films [ 6 ].…”
