Trema Orientalis is a medicinal plant used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases including hypertension. The present study was undertaken to investigate phytochemical compounds, diuretic activity and subacute toxicity of the hydromethanolic leaf extracts of Trema orientalis. Phytochemical analysis carried out through color and precipitation reactions revealed the presence of many metabolites. The measurement of diuretic activity carried out by saline overload with 0.9% NaCl at a dose of 50 mL/kg in wistar rats showed that the hydromethanolic extract of Trema orientalis leaves had diuretic activity at a dose of 200 mg/kg of body weight. However, this diuretic activity was relatively low compared to the action of the reference molecule, furosemide. The study of the subacute toxicity of the extract took place over 28 days. No significant difference was recorded in the body weights during the 28 days of the study. Likewise, the weight of the organs collected after sacrifice of the rats and their macroscopic aspects did not show any significant difference with those of the control group. The extract increased the count of white and red blood cells as wells as platelets, practically at the two doses used and caused a decrease in ALT at the dose of 500 mg/kg. The extract could have a beneficial effect like a boosting immunity and would not present any toxicity at these doses. Keywords: phytochemical, diuretic, subacute toxicity, Trema orientalis

Anaemia, one of the most common blood nutrition deficiency affecting at all ages of people. In Ayurveda, according to Acharya Charak, sign and symptoms of anaemia has close resemblance to Pandu Roga as like paleness, weakness, Heart Tonic, Eye Inflammation etc. As WHO claims, Anaemia is a medical situation in which the amount of RBCs or Hb count is lower than the normal individual and it is estimated that over 40 percent of children below age five are anaemic. On the basis of reported data plant extracts have been proved to be effective alternative therapy for the management of anaemic conditions. Physicians mostly prescribe iron-rich diet and vitamin supplements for the treatment of anaemia. Iron supplements are easily available in markets, if consumed prolonged, it can cause severe problems like gastro intestinal problems, hepatic disorders and sometimes even cause cancer. Hence, scientists are looking for an alternative for these iron supplements for the management of anaemia. Plant extracts could play a great role against anaemia. In this study, extracts of 20different plants as like- Solanum nigrum, Terminalia chebula, Beta Vulgaris etc. are discussed, which are experimentally proven to be effective in anaemia. Applications of these medicinal plants in anaemia is also mentioned in classical Ayurveda literature from ancient time. So, these plant extracts are may be an alternative therapy for the management of anaemia and this study could help researchers for research in anaemia and other related disorders.

Penyakit hati bisa diakibatkan oleh sejumlah faktor diantaranya faktor genetik, infeksi virus, konsumsi alkohol, obesitas, bahan kimia, serta konsumsi obat-obatan. Setiap tahunnya, di wilayah Asia Tenggara, terjadi sekitar 410.000 kematian akibat hepatitis. Dari keseluruhan kasus kematian tersebut, sebanyak 78% terjadi pada penderita kanker hati dan sirosis yang dipicu oleh hepatitis B dan C. Salah satu tanaman yang dapat memberikan efek hepatoprotektif yaitu meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L.). Review artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui mekanisme aktivitas hepatoprotektor dari tanaman meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L.) terhadap perbaikan kondisi penderita penyakit hati. Data terkait aktivitas hepatoprotektor tanaman meniran dihimpun melalui sejumlah literatur, baik itu jurnal nasional maupun internasional, yang dipublikasikan pada situs seperti ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Pubmed, ResearchGate, dan Elsevier. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa P. niruri memberikan aktivitas hepatoprotektif melalui mekanisme pengurangan peroksidasi lipid dan mempertahankan glutathione dalam bentuk tereduksi. Ekstrak air P. niruri mampu memberikan penurunan kadar enzim aspartate aminotransferase (AST) dan alanine aminotransferase (ALT) secara signifikan (p < 0,001), bila dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol dan kelompok yang diinduksi CCl4. Selain itu, isolat protein P. niruri melindungi jaringan hati terhadap kerusakan oksidatif dan membantu merangsang mekanisme perbaikan yang ada di hati. Senyawa mayor yang berperan dalam memberikan aktivitas hepatoprotektor tersebut yakni filantin yang merupakan golongan senyawa lignan. Dengan demikian, P. niruri memiliki potensi aktivitas hepatoprotektor yang memberikan perbaikan kondisi pada penderita penyakit hati. Penelitian lebih lanjut dibutuhkan untuk memperoleh dosis maksimum dari tanaman terkait dan isolat protein yang berperan sebagai hepatoprotektor dalam P. niruri.
