Samples of Vitex doniana fruit (black plum) were collected from Vunchi village in Bida metropolis. The dried endocarp was washed, ground into powder and analysed for the proximate, vitamins and mineral compositions. The values (%DW) of moisture, ash, crude protein, crude fibre, crude fat and carbohydrate available were 16. 66, 11.50, 8.24, 0.58, 34.62 and 28.40, respectively. Levels of Vitamin A, B1, B2, B6 and C were 0.27, 18.33, 4.80, 20.45 and 35.58 (mg/100g DW) respectively. Mineral (mg/100g DW) were: potassium (16.5), sodium (10.40), calcium (30.27), iron (5.20), Copper (2.70), magnesium (20.10) and phosphorus (16.50). The result indicates that Vitex doniana fruit pulp could be promoted as: carbohydrate and lipid supplements for cereal-based diets in rural communities, another cheaper source of raw material for juice production, fortified into feed of ruminants, while its moderate calcium value could be used for the management of oesteomalacia.

Combined Plant Mixture (CPM) in ratio of 1:1 (Vitex doniana, Diospyros mesipiliformis, Acacia polyacantha, Parinari macrophylla, Ficus sycomorus and Parkia biglobosa) was extracted with methanol and screened for antimalarial activity. The CPM Methanol extract residue was suspended in water and fractionated with Hexane (HX), Ethylacetate (EA) and n-Butanol (BUT). The Methanolic CPM extract has shows some antimalarial activity with Mean Survival Times (MST) of 10.16 to 12.16 days. All the mice in control group were found dead on 14 th day of study and one mice was still alive on 14 th day in both the groups with 15% and 30% parasitaemia against Plasmodium yoelli nigeriensis N67 and Plasmodium berghei K173 respectively. The EA fraction was the most active against P. yoelli nigeriensis N67 having 2 mice surviving up to 14 th day with 5.5% parasitaemia and MST of 13.4 days. Fractions of water (WT), HX and BUT have 12.5, 25, and 100% (dead) parasitaemia with mean survival times of 12.6, 9.33 and 8.5 days against 100% (dead) parasitaemia and 8.20 days of MST when compared with control. HX fraction was the most active against P. berghei K173 followed by BUT fraction with one mice surviving up to 14 th day without parasitaemia but with MST of 15.0 and 13.5 days respectively. EA and WT fractions have 22.66 and 100% (dead) parasitaemia with mean survival times of 11.80 and 10.80 days respectively. The study investigated the in vitro anti-microbial activity of crude alkaloids from the seeds of Vitex doniana against some selected bacteria and fungal strains. Agar well diffusion method was used to test the antimicrobial activity using ciprofloxacin and ketoconazole as controls. Phytochemical and proximate analyses were carried out by standard methods. The crude extract showed the presence of alkaloids, tannins and resins in abundance. Proximate analysis indicated fat/oil (11±0.73 %), protein (0.26±0.02 %), moisture (0.21±0.01 %), ash (5.0±0.22 %) and carbohydrate (6.42±0.28 %). The antimicrobial study indicated that the crude extract was more effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC 3.84 mg/ml) and Salmonella typhi (MIC 3.84 mg/ml) and other Gram-positive bacteria. The crude alkaloids generally showed lower activity in case of Gram-negative (MIC Salmonella typhi 4.20 mg/ml) than in Gram-positive bacteria (MIC Staphylococcus aureus 2.52 mg/ml). Surprisingly, the crude alkaloids from the seeds, in addition to improved activity against all the bacteria strains, showed significant activity against Candida albicans (MIC 1.18 mg/mL. V. doniana seed extract was found to be potent against some clinical strains of both Gram-positive and negative bacteria but not fungi; however, its alkaloids has promising antifungal activity.
