Activity coefficient of aqueous sodium bicarbonate

Abstract: The determination of the activity coefficient and related properties of sodium bicarbonate presents special problems because of the appreciable vapor pressure of C02 above such solutions. With the development of reliable equations for the thermodynamic properties of mixed electrolytes, it is possible to determine the parameters for NaHC03 from cell measurements or NaCl-NaHC03 mixtures. Literature data are analyzed to illustrate the method and provide interim values, but it is noted that further measurements ov… Show more

“…Likewise, the tables of activities and osmotic coefficients generated by Hamer et al 28 , Goldberg et al [24][25][26][27] Therefore, based on the high accuracy of the methods to estimate the osmotic coefficients as well as the high reliability of the sources of information used in this work, it appears that the impact of the uncertainty of the data in the correlation accuracy is low. 8,9,10,16,23,10,34 . Finally, Table 1 includes the classification of each ion in terms of its effects on the structure of water, which can be either by increasing the stability of the waterwater interactions (structure makers or kosmotropes) or by disrupting it (structure breakers or chaotropes).…”

“…Thermodynamic models such as EQ3NR use logK values at p = 0 and provide their own ionic-strength corrections. Experimentally derived activity coefficients we^e used to correct the measured values of logK to p = 0 (Robinson and 5tok.es 1959;Pitzer and Peiper 1980;Khoo et al . 1981;and Peiper and Pitzer 1332).…”
